Project Runway 8: Episode 3
The first innovation challenge of the season! I love unconventional material challenges because it’s interesting to see the designer’s creative thought processes using stuff that no one would ever use. They went to a store called Party Glitters to get their material which were party supplies like hats, streamers, etc. Of course, this wouldn’t be Project Runway without throwing in another twist which was to create an accessory out of materials their models gave them. Let’s see what they did, shall we:
Christopher’s Design:
I thought this dress was cute. Simple, nicely finished with details that just made it very wearable. I believe napkins are very delicate and can tear or fall apart easily but it didn’t. His accessory of the ring was cute and I liked the color and how it fit with his dress. I liked this design but it wasn’t the most impressive thing I’ve seen this round. 8/10

Michael D.’s Design:
When it came out, I thought it was pretty shiny and was intriguing but then it walked and the bottom was pretty stiff. The top was nice but sort of fragile, while the bottom just looks odd and strange. He called it an Alice In Wonderland type of outfit, I kind of agree but more futuristic. I think this a pretty good design but I’m not impressed. 7.5/10
Andy’s Design:
Before she even walked out what the model did with her hair was GENIUS! This look was genius too, it looks like Rihanna and Lady GaGa, it’s the most edgy look so far this season. It’s innovative and I just think it’s amazing to look at, especially thinking that it’s entirely made of ribbons. The glove was a great idea. I believe this was my favorite look to date on this season but that might change because this is a talented group. 10/10
A.J.’s Design:
This design….this design, what to say……I wouldn’t even call it a design, I would say it looks like a little girl’s birthday party vomited and this what formed. I don’t get that fringe thing near her crotch area, I don’t think she wants carpet there, I think hardwood floors would have been more flattering. The necklace was nice, at least he could think on his feet and make something nice. Also, please learn what a compliment is because it will help you a lot in life, don’t ever say thank you to “it’s a hot mess” ever again. 2/10
Ivy’s Design:
I don’t get Ivy, she has recently produced lackluster outfits. I like texture in designs, it gives it dimension but when there is that much texture it looks like a walking mess. She needed some color, although she added a little purple on the side but you can’t really see it, or something step it up a few notches, who am I kidding many notches, to make it at least a contender for anything. This is unflattering to this gorgeous model’s body, she really needs to turn up the volume soon and take some risks. 5/10
Michael C.’s Design:
This is what I’m talking about with texture! Thank you Michael, hopefully Ivy picks up some lessons from this outfit. Diversifying textures along with bright red color, intrigues and catches the eye. I thought this gown was definitely a top contender for this round. 9/10
Peach’s Design:
Simple and boring top but the skirt is where the party is at. It has a tutu silhouette but taking a spin adding that extra layer of paper bags with zebra print with pops of pink. Looking at the top again, because we all know we got bored quickly, it seems flappy near the breast area, either intentional or not, it wasn’t flattering. 6.5/10
Gretchen’s Design:
This design is amazing! I still can’t believe she made this from that supply store especially from what I’ve seen from some of the designers before. It seems as though they went to two different stores or maybe she’s just too innovative and that’s why everyone else is jealous. The top is really nice, the detailing was great plus her “leather” jacket. Trashbag leather seems popular when doing innovative challenges but if they come out that good, I’d do it too. Her skirt was just wow, I can’t believe she was able to do that, and the way it moved was just great. I think many might believe that the boots were a bad decision but I think this design called for boots, well shorter boots. I just know they aren’t supplied everything, just certain things and if they can’t find what they want they have to make do with what is given to them by Piperlime.com. 10/10

Mondo’s Design:
Mondo can make cute clothes, he has done it two challenges in a row now. His bodice is very nice but there really isn’t any sides to it or even a back. The skirt is made of like plastic lei which is a very nice soft contrast to the hard shell texture of the bodice. 8/10

Casanova’s Design:
Whoever hires Casanova, I suggest you RUN FOR THE F%#KING HILLS! This is the second trainwreck he has done in this competition, he is really like a box of chocolate, you’re never gonna know what you’re gonna get. One day it’s a stripper, then office wear, next it’s a shiny mermaid trainwreck of a costume. He completely overdesigned this, it looks as though two dresses were sewn together. The back of the design actually wasn’t horrendous while I can’t say the same for the front. Did I also tell you that he completely slaughtered plush puppies for that scarf? Well he did and let me tell you it didn’t help his terrible design anymore than the walking disaster it was. I think he needs to learn that when Tim says not to use or do something, it’s best not to especially when in the past it has sent many home. 4/10

Kristin’s Design:
Kristin, I know what I said last round about doing the same design over again and I’m glad you listened. But this is not what I meant, I meant do something different that is good, if this is what I knew you were going to do I would have hoped you did the same thing as before. I like flowy dresses but this isn’t flowy it just seems while your model was walking wind blew plastic garbage onto her and it has a right to, garbage might be even more creative than that dress that’s underneath, look at what Gretchen did with garbage bags. It has no shape, it looks as though it’s trying to pry itself apart, what more could I add…it might not be the worst design out there but it’s definitely nowhere near the top that’s for sure. 5/10

April’s Design:
I actually really liked this design but I had a lot of really high scoring designs this round. It’s another design that could be Gaga inspired but like a cheap version of Gaga. I just like all that work, it gives the design a focal point and at least pops when you look at it. 9/10

Sarah’s Design:
Sarah, Sarah, Sarah, I don’t get your obsession with plastic fake palm trees. You really just couldn’t give it up no matter how many times you tried to make it work and you knew you couldn’t. Also, adding it on top of a dress made of table covers doesn’t make this design innovative or creative. That is what was asked of you guys this round. Nothing more to say than boring and uncreative using conventional materials with many bad ideas together. 3/10

Valerie’s Design:
Napkin dress! I thought this was nicely executed and she is very lucky to have the model she has. The model works it and looks great in it, I believe if she had a different model it could be a totally different story because it’s sexy but not vulgar. This design was just one of those very beautiful ones with very nice detailing in the skirt with the napkin folds but I felt it wouldn’t pop in a room of all these designs. I think though it’s one that many girls would want to wear. 8.5/10

My Winner: Andy

This was a close battle between Andy and Gretchen but because he pulled out something edgy, I believe he got the slight edge from me.
Out: A.J.

Sarah’s was bad and lacked creativity, Casanova’s was overworked but at least they wasn’t a horrible disaster pink crotchy dress walking.
